What it's Bowen?

The Bowen Technique brings one of the most profound therapeutic concept in the world today. It is based on the theory that once total relaxation of the body has been achieved, the inner ability to address any problems in the body and mind – by bringing them back to balance and harmony – is activated.

The Bowen Technique is a unique form of neuromuscular re-patterning. It works not only through the nervous system, on both structural and muscular levels, but also through the lymphatic and circulatory system. It is also renowned for its effectiveness with internal conditions and rehabilitation time improvement.

Who can benefit from the Bowen technique?

Bowen therapy may be effective when other techniques have failed to deal with the root cause of the problem, particularly in the case of ongoing aches and pain in a specific area, such as a stiff neck. If you are experiencing chronic pain or recovering from an injury, you should always speak with your doctor before beginning any course of complementary treatment.

It’s also frequently used to address emotional problems, including anxiety and tension. If you can’t find a Bowen therapist in your area, you could also consider a Relaxing Massage, which may also help you relax, unwind and get a good night’s sleep.

WHAT DOES A BOWEN TREATMENT INVOLVE?

It is best to wear light and loose clothing to an appointment, such as a T-shirt and running shorts or tracksuit bottoms.

The Bowen therapist will take a full medical history from the client and discuss the nature of the current problem.

All appointments include a full musculo-skeletal assessment and lymphatic drainage.

Using only fingers and thumbs, the Bowen therapist makes gentle rolling movements at precise points (over muscles, ligaments or nerves), interspersed with periods of rest.

The treatment takes about 45 minutes and in many cases relief from pain is experienced on the first visit. Many people state that over the next 3-4 days they experience reactions as the body accepts the therapy and realigns itself.

After a treatment it is advised to drink plenty of water.

HOW MANY BOWEN TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

Many patients experience a dramatic improvement after just one session, and conditions can often clear with only 3 or 4 treatments.

The aim of Bowen therapy is to help the client make a full and speedy recovery, rather than involving them in long-term treatment. The exact number of sessions required will of course depend on the nature and severity of the problem.

Encouragingly, chronic long-term pain often responds quickly to Bowen therapy.

I stumbled across Bowen therapy more or less by accident. I knew nothing about the technique but three months of severe neck pain had made me willing to try almost anything!

To my surprise I found that after only one session the flexibility in my neck had returned and the pain been greatly reduced.
